PPD Porfolio Evaluation.

The work that I chose to put into my portfolio is all from my second year this is because I feel that the level of my work is to a higher standard from than in my first year. In some respect my portfolio contains quite a board range of work and shows that I have a lot of skills to offer. But I will need to narrow down my design practice next year and focus on creating a strong portfolio.

Within my portfolio I have also tried to keep the layout quite simple so that the images stand out on the page and aren't over crowd but other images or text. So that it shows a clean image of the final resolutions and design work. Hopefully this shows a clear understanding on what I have produced and in some respects speaks for itself so to speak.

Through out this year I have been influence by designers such as Kate Moross and Mike Perry. Looking into hand rendered type and the use of colour to create impact within design. I feel that I mainly like to work with image but I'm looking in to combining the two and improving my illustrator skills. Screen print is also of a great interest to me and I wish to further my skills next year. During this year it has become more relevent to my design practice and I'v mainly been influenced by Keep Calm Gallery . This design studio creates some lovely prints using both type and image to convey the message. Alot of their work is surrounded by sayings/proverbs and then illustrate around those themes experimenting with colour and different print techniques.

During this year I have found that one of my strengths is using illustrator more effciently, I'v found that my skills have really developed over this year and I want to continue with this next year. I'v also found that I have more confidence when it comes to screen printing and creating image for that. But I still have more to learn with colour seperation and different techniques. So for next year I plan to create a more screen print based portfolio and experiment more with this method of printing.

However one of my main weaknesses is that I lack confidence when selecting an idea to work with as I'm never sure whether it will work out or not. Also working at a quicker pace in the initial stages of design would benefit me, enabling me to really push my ideas until I can go no further.

Things I want to improve on next year include creating more screen printed resolutions to briefs and spending time to develop these skills. I also want to become more confident when using other design software as this is an area that I need to improve on.

For my dissertation I have chosen to focus on the influence of graphic design on mass media and consummerism. Looking into the different methods of advertising and how they communicate the message. I chose to look in to this as I'm planning on having a more image based portfolio and looking in to the ways in which a message is communicated within advertising could prove to be quite helpful. I also want to pick up on when advertisment becomes too controvercial and the methods in which this is portrayed.

This was my submission to the typo-gateaux competition lots of colour and sugary goodness. I chose the letter 'E' because of all the e-numbers that's probably in the cake...yum...and yes 'E' is for Emma of course.
And to top it of I came runner up in the competition and won a small tin of spaghetti hoops!!!hell yeahhhh.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Firstly learning about all the printing processes available in print was useful and in doing so this allows me to take it in to consideration what methods of print to use with my work. As I hadn't really heard of print processes such as Rotogravure before and it was good to know how this method works. Also, Letter Press which was very useful as I have always wanted to learn about the press and what could be produced from such a process. I would have liked to use this method of printing with this project but I feel that it didn't really fit with what I was producing.

I also feel that I have more of an awareness for colour methods and what to take in to consideration when designing something on screen and then taking it in to print. Also it was useful to find out how much printing costs are and summing up how much it would cost to print such a product, which proved to be quite costly in some cases.

2. What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?

I found that creating thumbnails for my layouts helped within the decision making on my final presentation boards. Producing small scale thumbnails for my products also provided the in this decision making also.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

I have looked in to the different print processes that were available for my product. Therefore allowing me to have some idea of how my designs would be produced commercially and the cost values as well. I also feel that through the use of thumbnail layout sheets i have been able to explore the design values of my product.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?

Firstly I feel that some of my designs could have been explored a little further and I could have experimented more with the 'food photography' side of my project(as the photography side of things didn't really work out that well) More research in to the methods of promotion in the food industry.

5. Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

get access to screen print earlier. Therefore I have more time to print as I ran out of time to use this printing method within this project.
make design decisions sooner. So that my work can move on at a pace.
experiment more with my designs do that I have a varied range of possible designs.
be more organized when it comes to printing my presentation boards as I have found out that digital print can be a very time consuming place near to a deadline!!!
be aware of my message I am trying to deliver and never loose track of this, as my work started to drift a little from not doing so.

This is an awesome concept for a collaborative project, getting people to have their say on what a certain pantone colour reminds them of at Christmas.lovely stuff.

TenOverSix is an accessories boutique and installation space in L.A. TenOverSix, takes its name from the Mad Hatter's price tag in Alice in Wonderland. Shoe designer Kristen Lee, filmmaker Joe Cole, stylist Gina Correll, and designer Brady Cunningham are the wonders behind the incredible expertly curated wonderland.

Really nice design for the bag, its kept quite simple and clean but i think thats the beauty of it.

On Friday I went to visit a small company called Bermuda Print and I got shown around their department. However they only specialize in digital print, but what they had to show me was all useful for the current brief and they were very happy to answer my questions. It was very informative to be shown the process of print especially on such a large scale in some cases. They also gave me a bunch of samples to take away which was very good of them.

This was quite a useful refresher to screen print since I hadn't printed in a while. It was an interesting image we had to use and we experimented with the registration of the type to offset the image, it had quite a nice effect.

LETTERPRESS!!!

Yeyy finally got to do letterpress!!!Always wanted to know how this process worked and now I had the chance.
To create the above type I chose to use 18pt Clarendon Bold and 23pt leading.
Things to remember:

make sure all the notches on each letter are facing upwards so that the type reads correctly when printed.
use middles for the spaces between words.
use thins for the spacing between punctuation.
quads are used as padding to fill the gaps.
also when creating the said type start from left to right making sure that the type is arranged backwards so that it will be printed correctly.

I will definitely try to use this process again at some point?!?!?

Letterpress.

Flatbed Cylinder Press: The type or plate is locked in a chase which is then mounted on the flatbed of the press. Grippers on a rotating impression cylinder pick up a sheet of paper and as the cylinder revolves, the paper is pulled around it. The inked flatbed containing the letterpress plate then moves under the impression cylinder. The squeeze between the impression cylinder and the flatbed creates the printed impression on the paper. When the impression is complete, the flatbed returns to its original position and is inked for the next impression.

The letterpress process is referred to as a "relief" process because the printed image is produced from a plate in which the image area is slightly raised above the non-image surface of the plate. It is a direct printing method in that the inked plate applies the image directly to the substrate. Letterpress is one of the oldest printing processes and was the most widely used process until the middle of the 20th century when advances in other printing processes made it obsolete. Flexography, which is an updated version of letterpress, is now the dominate relief printing process.

The letterpress process utilizes an ink that is thick in consistency and is well suited for relief printing. A set of rollers deposits the ink on the raised image area of the type or plate, but ink is not deposited on the non-image areas. For this reason, letterpress plates do not require any dampening in order to keep the non-image areas free of ink. This makes the process a simple one and allows for consistent results, but the process still cannot match the quality of more sophisticated print processes.

Gravure.

Gravure is a high quality printing process capable of producing printed images which have a continuous tone effect similar to a photograph. The gravure process utilizes a metal printing cylinder onto which the image is etched.

Gravure is used for many packaging applications, magazines, and pressure sensitive labels. Gravure is the preferred method of producing magazines and catalogs that have large circulations. An example of a high volume, high quality publication that utilizes rotogravure is the "National Geographic" magazine.

There are also many specialty items that are created with rotogravure including gift wrap, wallpaper, plastic laminates, printed upholstery, imitation wood grain finishes, and vinyl flooring. Many of the specialty items are printed on very wide presses. Some of them, such as those that print patterns on floor coverings, are up to 150 inches wide.

A gravure sheet-fed process is used for smaller runs for such items as limited edition prints and other artwork, photographic books, high denomination postage stamps, stock certificates, and some advertising pieces.

Flexography.

A relief printing process using rubber or plastic plates on a web-fed press and solvent liquid inks. Mainly used for packaging and for some newspapers.

Flexography is a printing process which utilizes a flexible relief plate that can be adhered to a printing cylinder. It is basically an updated version of letterpress. It much more versatile than letterpress in that it can be used for printing on almost any type of media including plastic, metallic films, cellophane, and paper. It is widely used for printing on the non-porous stocks required for various types of food packaging. It is also well suited for printing large areas of solid color.

Other common applications printed with flexography include gift wrap, wall covering, magazines, newspaper inserts, paperback books, telephone directories, and business forms.

Offset Lithography.

A print process where the image and non image areas are on the same surface plane of the plate. As water and grease don't mix, the surface of the plate is treated to attract ink and repel water.

Advantages of offset printing compared to other printing methods include:

Consistent high image quality. Offset printing produces sharp and clean images and type more easily than letterpress printing because the rubber blanket conforms to the texture of the printing surface.
Quick and easy production of printing plates.
The more you print, the less you pay per page, because most of the price goes into the preparation undergone before the first sheet of paper is printing and ready for distribution. Any additional paper print will only cost the client paper price (and ink), which is very minimal.

Pad printing.

Pad printing is a printing process that can transfer a 2-D image onto a 3-D object. This is accomplished using an indirect offset (gravure) printing process that involves an image being transferred from the printing plate (cliché) via a silicone pad onto a substrate (surface to be printed). Pad printing is used for printing on otherwise impossible products in many industries including medical, automotive, promotional, apparel, electronics, appliances, sports equipment and toys.

Example of the uses of Pad printing:

Letters on computer keyboards and calculator keys
TV and computer monitors
Identification labels and serial numbers for many applications.

Screen Print.

Screen printing has been used for centuries and although there have been many improvements with the technology, the process still consists of forcing ink through a stencil covered fabric or wire mesh which has been mounted in a sturdy frame. The ink goes through only the open areas of the stencil and is deposited onto a printing surface positioned below the frame. Screen printing is very versatile and it is often the only printing process capable of handling certain applications.

The equipment costs for screen printing are lower than other printing processes, but the rate of production is usually slower. Manual screen printing can be accomplished with only a few simple items: a sturdy frame, screen fabric, stencils, squeegees, and ink. Automatic press equipment is available which greatly speeds up the process, but it is no match for the output delivered by press equipment used for other print processes.

Screen printing can be performed on almost any type of material including paper, glass, fabric, plastic, wood, and metal. Products as varied as signs, posters, circuit boards, mugs, clothing, and soft drink bottles can be printed using the process. Screen printing is very useful when an image needs to be wrapped around an object or when images need to be printed onto oddly shaped manufactured objects.

Hacienda 15th birthday poster.

This is a Blanka designed replica of the Mark Farrow-designed Haçienda 15th birthday poster, which is printed in three spot colours and a reflective ink.

As quoted from the serif website:

“We designed this poster to celebrate the 15th birthday of the Haçienda.” Farrow explains, “We had no idea at the time that it would be the club’s last. The code 51 15 25 05 97 (FAC 51 is 15 on 25 05 97) was printed in a reflective ink onto a grey background which rendered it almost invisible in daylight. The poster only came to life at night under the glare of car headlights. Our reasoning being that the message was only important to people who were out after dark.”

craig ward great use of protractors to create the type face it links really well with the content of the poster. craig ward an interesting type face using what seems to be hair.although the typeface that is created from is very effective. si scott fluid text and really effective. PMKFA Michael Thorsby produces some nice work under the enigmatic moniker PMKFA craig ward - words are pictures which in this case it is true the face is completely created only using letters. it works really well and this piece was used for waterstones book store.

ian stevenson i like the use of toys used within his photography fun and quirky imagery. sleeve face.com interesting use of vinyl covers this really is a new meaning to what one is used for.however the compositions work really well and the heads on the vinyl covers seem to fit really well to figures within the photos. eye candy by anne de vries theres sooo much colour within this photo which is great it almost creates this sense of oozing garbage, but with the colour from the packaging.really attractive to the eye and definitely fits its title 'eye candy' lost by david shrigley i like the simplicity of this piece but this is unmistakably a shrigley piece what with the hand written type and quirky text.but as a photo it really works and it would definitely make you stop and read the notice. sarah kane - interesting composition not quite sure what is going but it does really capture a moment in the night.

Hannah Waldron:a series of envelopes and letter paper in the shape of hearts, clouds and kites. once received the envelopes unfold to form letter paper so that the receiver can write/draw back to the sender. i like the idea behind this piece its really interactive between its users.and the feedback that would be returned to you would be really interesting. Let's make something!peter blake collaboration with rachel craddock. this stencil became a series of 3 t-shirts surrounding the theme of creativity. nice clean graphics and everyone can relate to these objects. another image by peter blake. screen printed/2 layers. first layer is in black ink and describes what would happen if he never had any motivation then another layer is added over the top of this and says the opposite. describing what he has achieved etc....the gloss layer is invisible unless it catches the light, which is metaphor for the endeavor to see our dreams become reality.i like this piece and is so true to life!!! yet another image from peter blake i like the use type from the punched holes from the paper. simple device but is really effective.

Alex Trochut is a young designer working in Barcelona. With a love of illustration and type he has already worked for clients that include The Rolling Stones, British Airways, Channel 4 and Nike. Alex is certainly a designer with a bright future ahead of him.

simple and effective. this is by david sparshott good use of type and image.unusual way of promotion. dan mumford this poster was designed for a university. this piece almost shouts out to be looked at and contains impact imagery.

Using strong imagery, with such bold colours and hand-drawn type, this is classic Neasden Control Centre. The red overprinted triangle at the bottom gives a great texture and stands out really well.

Based upon a nowhere place in the UK - Neasden Control Centre was set up in late '99 working on walls, screens and almost everything in between. Home to Churchill's lost bunker, the tea cup poisoner, Noggin the Nog, the worldâs tallest man and Twiggy amongst others. NCC are located in the upper left particle of the core zone and currently on a mission. NCC has exhibited widely across the globe, has had work published in many international magazines and recently had their third book, "Lost Control", published by Die Gestalten Verlag.

robert hanson

robert uses a great colour scheme, beautiful composition and clean lines in his piece, loosely based on Berlin

Robert works increasingly in illustration, making work that is simple and restrained with an element of humour to it. Recent commissions include Running Amok, Artlink, Doggerfisher, The Guardian, John Brown Citrus Publishing and Tiny Showcase.

Supermundane lives and works in London and is part of the new era of the multidisciplined creative. He has become known as an artist, art director, typographer, illustrator, graphic artist and writer. His graphic art depicts a utopian world of organic shapes and beasts, displaying hope, melancholy and beauty, and has been exhibited worldwide. His work for Sleaze and Good For Nothing magazines, took his pared down, hand produced aesthetic to a wider audience. He has produced work for Playstation, Orange, Hoegaarden, Colette, New York Times, Liberty, Juliet Lewis and the Licks and is currently Art Director for kids magazine Anorak.

Holly Wales:Holly's 'Class of '72' recreates a yearbook defaced with marker pen, using black ink over a very dark grey, and a burst of shocking pink too. The more you look at the faces the more you see.

Holly explores a variety of subject matter through self-initiated and commercial work for a range of international clients. She systematically experiments with materials and subject and enjoys work which has a story to tell.

i like how the simple change in the first letter of the words has been switched yet the message is still achieved. i think that the saying less is more is so well known that when we first read this we automatically understand the subtle change in the words. the layering of the text is really effective too and almost makes it 3D like.

this was produced from an A1 sheet of paper cut down to form this delicate illustration. i think the attention to detail is really achieved here. i also like the fact that the text is intertwined within the illustration and you have to look closely to work out what it says.

Peter Blake:as quoted by the designer.'This screen printed poster has 2 layers, the first is in black ink and describes what would happen if I never had any motivation, imagining that my life would end up fading into normality. The other is printed over the top in a gloss varnish and describes the opposite: what would happen if I grabbed every opportunity and achieved my dreams. The gloss varnish layer is invisible unless it catches the light, a metaphor for the endeavor to see our dreams become reality.'
i think the concept behind this is brilliant its almost inspiration to all designers because its so relevant, and gives you something to aim for and not just to accept the norm as we are creative people.

This piece is crazy on the eyes but it is really effective and is very eye catching!!!its the good use of the line spacing in between each line that makes it so effective, as if they were spaced further apart it would work as well.

Lazy Oaf approached a host of illustrators whose work they admire and asked them to customise a pair of plain pumps. Simple - and the results are invariable jolly, bright, colourful, one-off artworks by the likes of Al Heighton, Kate Moross, Ian Stevenson, Kate Sutton, Peskimo, Super Super - and many more contributors.
Shame i didn't find this when i was doing my shoe project!!!i love the DIY nature of producing these shoes and in doing so producing one off designs.

Featured here is a 3D special from illustrated ape above this text is the full 12 tile poster/wallpaper however this is contained within the magazine in which you have instructions to construct.
The visual impact that this poster gives out it quite immense and its also quite hard to look at, as there is so much going on in the image you don't know what to look at first. Yours eyes are bombarded with the bold illustrations and combined with the limited colours creates this effective image.
Supplied with the issue you get a pair of 3D glasses to wear and when viewing the piece through the glasses make the poster much easier on the eyes. This is where the image becomes clearer and the full 3D effect is achieved!!!

Christmas promotion by zip design:'morning after spectacles'.
This device was inspired by advertisements for x-ray vision found at the back of comic books from the 1950's and '60's, offering an instant cure. The packaging that the glasses are contained in is reminiscent to these ads.
The box was created using reverse grey card board and screen printed with white and cyan, with white tissue paper keeping the glasses secure.
The fact that the promotion is selling a joke or gimmick makes the product quite fun and would create interest around the product itself.

The interactive nature of this business card works really well as what you read isn't quite right as it is followed by something underneath the silver strip.
The use of a scratch panel is a useful technique to hide something temporarily and every viewer of this piece will want to scratch it off. And the message received is clear too.

A Tough Client

A tough client/origin.
The business card appears to be ordinary at a first glance but it takes brutal strength to open it up then the information is revealed to the viewer.
The concept behind this is perfect for advertising a personal trainer with links to pulling muscles and strength to open the card.
It works by doubling up a four page card and folding them inside itself, the elastic band is hidden from the viewer and is then revealed when opened.

Each of these packages contain a T-shirt that is shrink-wrapped onto a Styrofoam tray and labeled, giving the effect of fresh produce in a supermarket. Its is also a nice touch that an illustrated piece of meat adorns the front of the t-shirt and makes the packaging easier to relate too.

Project: Invitation.
Recipients of this invitation to a PR company's press open day instantly want to hold it up in the direction of the nearest light source. The image would become clearer when the light shines through and the transparency of the paper adds the authenticity to the x-ray effect of the hand image. It's an attractive piece that uses paper as an integral part of the design rather than just a surface image. It also encourages anyone looking at it to absorb the information from a different angle.

This simple but strong identity designed by Arizona's Ater Hours Creative for client Blue Space involves the use of die-cut square on white against blue as shown here. The only way of reading this brochure is to tear it apart from the middle. The question "what are you afraid of?" prompts the reader.This statement seems to be anti-design as it encourages the reader to violate the artwork in order to get to the content within.

This is die cut and folded to create the shape of a suitcase, it works well as this shape and holds a business card within it. The information given is advertising paper and the actual suitcase is made using a sample of it, therefore showing how strong the stock is an ideal for cutting and folding. This selling technique works really well when using the actual product you are advertising.
